The Islamic Studies Center

Introductions & Definitions

Islamic Studies Center is a non-governmental establishment that has an illuminating project aims to spread awareness ,culture of dialogue, as well as participating in the trend towards renewal and openness, and building up bridges of trust and love with the current movements in arabic, Islamic, and international communities, in order to achieve a sort of integration between human struggle for liberty, justice, and democracy, and the basic Islamic values which endorse them.
All that comes in a real need to deal with the impacts of fundamentalism and extremism, which distorted the picture of Islam in lots of nations, through different media resources.

Main Objectives
•    To present Islam and arabic civilization through mass media, and to set up a constructive dialogue with other cultures.
•    To participate in reactivating the movements that advocate the idea of revival in the Islamic world.
•    To contribute to the Islamic-Islamic dialogue, respecting diversity, and freedom in selecting from Islamic jurisprudence…and to give up the idea of extremism.
•    To set up the secular-islamic dialogue, in an effort to reinforce the common, and unify the various efforts to achieve the common goals, and manifest Islamic tolerance.
•    To contribute to the Christian-Islamic dialogue, on the base that both religions are the greatest on earth and that Syria was a center from which both spread.

Means and Methods

The center employs the following methods:
•    Organizing lectures and specified seminars that serve the center’s goals.
•    Participating in the regional and local conferences, to illuminate the picture of the moderate Islam, and shared living (Syrian model).
•    Preparing and presenting radio and television programs that aim at serving the mission of revival.
•     Holding positive debate conferences, to reinforce the common, and unify the efforts in the field of confronting western materialism.
•    Establishing a network of scientific relations with western universities, and similar studies centers, for the purpose of implementing more cooperation, expertise exchange, and making use of all possible occasions to introduce Islam and Arabic civilization.
•     Publishing books and researches that serve revival and awareness.
•    Organizing special meetings for the tourist groups which visit Damascus, in order to introduce Islam and Arabic civilization, and drive away the illusions, that became widespread in the west, about fundamentalism and extremism in the Muslim world.

Rules and Bases

Islamic Studies Center is a private non-governmental association. It was established in 1987 by some of Damascus notable personages.
Those are :
Dr. Mahmoud Keftaro, Dr. Mohammad Habash, Sheik Monzer Al-Dakr, Sheik Maa’shouk Elkhaznawi, and others.

The center runs its activities through tow apparatuses:
1-    The Board of Trustees.
2-    The General Administration.

Second: the irregular projects in which the center participates, like conferences, forums, and other scientific and cultural contests, organized by the center.

•    Launching the Omayad University, close to the Omayad Mosque.
•    Theuniversity  will be interested in heritage , revival matters, and have a number of faculties as follows:
o     Faculty of Orientalism Studies: This faculty receives students from European and western universities, and provides scientific specializations, courses, and research opportunities, in an effort to correct the common application of studying Orientalism in western cities at the time Orientalism is originally the state of pursuing and studying eastern sciences. There is no doubt that this would be a big jump to achieve academic justice towards our causes in the western scientific societies.
o    Faculty of Comparative Religious Studies: Specialists from all religions organize the curriculum of this field, and various religious clerics teach it, so that the faculty becomes a civilized milestone for Syria in the world, and an institute for religious cultures, as well as a symbol for shared living among people from all religions.
o    Faculty of Islamic Sects: This would be a faculty of comparative jurisprudence, in which traditionally removed (hidden) sects are taught, like Jaaferi, Ismaeli, Zaidi, Ibadi, Sofi, Moutazali, and Zahiri, in addition to the four already taught sects. Teaching and curriculum are provided by some jurists who belong to these sects, so that the heritage of them is saved, and the Syrian model of shared living is boosted.

o    Faculty of Islamic Arts: The artistic performance throughout the islamic history would be a major interest. The faculty is expected to teach this sort of knowledge in general, and the Syrian arts in specific. A branch for studying Christian arts would be opened.
